What type of wine is grown in the Finger Lakes the best vineyard in the Finger Lakes

One of the Finger Lakes most famous attractions is its many wineries. When the glaciers that created the lakes retreated, tens of thousand of years ago, they left behind not only magnificent bodies of water but also ideal grape growing conditions by depositing a layer of topsoil on the shale beds above the lakes. The deep lakes also provide protection from what otherwise would be a very cold climate by moderating the temperature along their shoreline.

Viniculture in the finger lake began in 1829 when the Reverend Bostwick planted a few grapevines near his home in Hammonds Port on the small “Y” shaped Keuka lake, to make sacramental wine.  His efforts were surprisingly successful and his neighbors took note.  Before long, vineyard ringed the village and Hammonds Port businesspeople banded people to form the country’s first commercial Winery, the pleasant Valley Company.  Other would be viticulturist followed suit, and within a few years, grapes were growing around Keuka, Canandaigua, and Seneca lakes.  The finger lakes is the premier wine growing region in the eastern United States.  More the 25 wineries are located on the shores of Seneca Lakes Lakewood Vineyards and Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

For decades, the vineyards of the Finger Lakes produced only native American concord, Niagara, and Delaware grapes, which are seldom used in the making of fine wines.

About 40 years ago, however, a few people began experimenting with the more complex European Vinifera grape. Again, efforts were surprisingly successful and today excellence chardonnays, Rieslings, Pinot noir, and sparking wines are produced throughout the region.  Todays, the finger lakes region boasts over 60 wineries, each one distinctly different from the next.  Some are large, some small, some house their own restaurants and gift shop.  Most hug the shores of Cayuga, Seneca, or keuka lakes and each lakes has its own wine growing association that publishes free maps and brochures, available throughout the region.

There is a traditional carousel, crazy cups and a train ride around the park. They have an array of rides suitable for the younger visitor and everyone will enjoy the water park. Also located in Rochester is the National Museum of Play, it is the perfect places for kids large and small. There is a butterfly and discovery garden to explore, an amazing coral reef aquarium and a carousel to visit. They also offer special activities for kids such as Meet the Keeper, Zoo crafts and even birthday parties. They offer animal demonstrations including an elephant encounter and penguin keeper talks. The zoo offers a fantastic day out with the chance to see some of the world’s most beautiful creatures up close and personal.

Also located in Syracuse is the Museum of Science and Technology, here you will find an IMAX Dome theatre, a planetarium as well as masses of hands on activities for all ages. Ever wanted to fly and F16? Well now you can, climb into the cockpit and take to the virtual skies. There is a science playhouse that is home to a giant climbing maze, which will keep the kids occupied while the adults indulge in a coffee. The Discovery Cave has something for everyone and will engage kids of all ages with a chance to dig for fossils. You can swim with the fishes in the living coral tank and test your luck as passing a volcano and pools of molten lava. Racing at Finger Lakes

Now anyone who doesn’t know there is a race track within the Finger Lakes region will automatically assume the title refers to boat racing, when in fact it is horse racing. The Finger Lakes Race Track was built and opened in May of 1962; however in 2004 there was a huge renovation costing around $10.5 million dollars. The Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track is different to most as it has an onsite ‘racino’, which is a casino based video-gaming area. The track is located in Farmington which lies in a northerly direction from Canandaigua Lake.

The track itself is not one of the biggest therefore the highest grade of race it can hold is a Grade 3; however this has not stopped the Finger Lakes racing rise to fame as it is home to three major New York Races. The New York Derby, which is part of the Big Apple Triple is held at the track and has been since 1969. The New York Oaks has been held there since 1986 and the New York Breeders’ Futurity has had its home there since 1963.

 Of course the most famous of all is the the New York Derby (part of the Big Apple Triple) which is held over three stages, the first being the Mike Lee Handicap which is held at Belmont Park. The second is the New York Derby at the Finger Lakes Race Track and lastly the Albany Stakes which is held at Saratoga Race Course. The race is usually held in July and can carry a prize of up to $150,000. The race is open to three year old horses that have been bred in the New York State area only.

The track has also been home to some of the best jockeys of all time, Angel Cordero, Bill Shoemaker and Pat Day are to name but a few. Like every track it has had its share of good and bad seasons and has gone through a number of owners but it has always managed to bounce back. The introduction of the racino in 2004 helped tremendously in boosting the tracks attendance and profits.

The track was also the proud home of the well-known race caller Ross Morton who worked at the tracks from the day it opened until his death in early 2008.
