The Finger Lakes are well known for its educational institutions, college, and universities.  At the very southern tip of Cayuga lake, the small progressive city of Ithaca is home to both Cornell University and Ithaca college. The city’s downtown is compact and flat, but all around are steep hills and waterfalls. On hill overlooking downtown and Cayuga lakes is Cornell University, built around a peaceful green lined founded by Ezra Cornell and Andrew D. white in 1865, Cornell was one of the first educational institutions in the country to admit all qualified students, regardless of sex, race or class. The most famous institution is Elmira College in Elmira, it was the summer home of Mark Twain where he created the famous characters Tom Swayer and Huckleberry Finn and it also the first women’s college that granted degree’s that were equal to those men were given. And the visitors who are interested in literary history will want to make a stop at the Mark Twain study, located on the Elmira College campus open mid June daily, it’s free entrance. The study was moved here from its original location on a hilltop on outskirts of town, built in the shape of a Mississippi steamboat pilot house, it contains many of his personal effects, including his trunks, desk and old Remington typewriter.  Twain under his real name Samuel Clemens is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.

There are number of private colleges in the region Ithaca College known as on of the world wide for its communications programme, and Keuka College in Penn Yan. In addition to the above there are four statutory colleges. A statutory college are based at Cornell University, and has been allocated to receive public funding on an on-going basis. All of the following stated The New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, New York State College of Human Ecology, the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine and lastly the New York State School of Industrial and Labor Relations.

Like all other aspect pertaining to the Finger Lakes region its level of educational institutes are well bred and diverse. If you wish to study in the region there are plenty of institution to choose from, all with a wide variety of course, degrees and diplomas to choose from.

The history of human habitation in New York State begins with the penetration of hunting and gathering tribes into the region during the millennia that followed the retreat of the last Ice Age glaciers.  Thousand years ago the tribes belonging to the Iroquoian group had come to dominate the future New York state region, sometimes during the late 16th century, five of these tribes the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayuga, and Senecas organised what become known as the league of the Iroquois or the Five Nations.  Many Finger Lakes towns and villages, and all of the lakes themselves bear names derived from Native American languages.

New York State’s topography has always played vital role in the area’s destiny. The superb array of natural features has forges the lifestyle of the local inhabitants, from the Iroquois in the 14th century to the entrepreneurs who strut their 21st century stuff.

 Geological activity has shaped New York State’s whole outlook, from its natural borders to its naturally inspired industries.  The New York State owes much of its magnificent topography to the most recent for four glaciers that have blanked North America in the last half million years.  As the ice crashed down from the north, it dragged with it greater quantities of rock and other debris.  The glaciers worked like a giant scouring pad, gouging lakes and creating drumlins.

This upheaval transformed New York into a rolling plain, traversed by lazy river.  Until this tremendous geological event, New York and much of the north central United States were deep beneath the Paleozoic Sea.  The sediments give insight into New York’s earliest life forms, from plants and fish, to animal and insects.

 The glacier left its signature in the Finger Lakes.  Originally river valleys, the lakes were dug well below sea level by the icy thrust.  Here the glacier met the ridge of the Appalachian Plateau, smashing 3,000 ft of moving ice into the river valley and scooping out U shaped grooves that become the Finger Lakes when the ice melted.  The depths reached by these narrow lakes are amazing, the maximal sounding of the deepest, Seneca is 634 feet.

The Finger Lakes were holy to the Iroquois, their unique form was evidence that six Nations were chosen people, Iroquois myth holds that the lakes were created by the handprint on the Great Spirit.

What museums can be found in the Finger Lakes?

The events in the Finger Lakes will warm your heart and soul. From unique museum exhibits to live comedy, you’ll find an event that makes you look forward to winter in the Finger Lakes. Syracuse the fourth-largest city in the state has experienced a small renaissance in recent years with the restoration of many historic buildings. Free entrance into the Erie Canal Museums where there is an interesting collection of historical exhibits on the canal, the centre is also a good place to pick up tourist literature about Syracuse and the Finger Lakes.Another to be visited is the Onondaga Historical Association Museum which is one of the finest of county museums in the state. Large and well laid out, the museums covers virtually every aspect of the area’s history, from early African American settlers.

Rubenstein Museum of Science and technology situated in the old Syracuse , better known locally as one of the favourite and a good destination for families.  The museum has exhibits on such subjects as the human body, the earth and the environment. Everson Museum of art housed in 1968 building, it contains one of the largest collections of ceramic, along with early Americans portrait and major 20th century American artists.

There is a good stop for families visiting Ithaca which is the Science centre, This  museum has many hands on exhibits, most kids enjoy the activities in the  earth and gravity areas.In Elmira is the Arnot Museum which is very well known for it’s collection  of famous European and American painting, most from the 18th and 19th centuries.

And also at the Harris Hill Soaring Centre and National Soaring Museum are located at Elmira it s open daily it has been attracting gliding fans since the 1910s. 

One of the most popular visitor attractions in New York is the Art Corning Museum of Glass located in the small city of Corning west Elmira. The museum includes the Glass Innovations Centre which explains the latest scientific developments in glassmaking, the Hot Glass Show, where visitors can watch and then try for themselves the art of glassblowing.

What type of wine is grown in the Finger Lakes the best vineyard in the Finger Lakes

One of the Finger Lakes most famous attractions is its many wineries. When the glaciers that created the lakes retreated, tens of thousand of years ago, they left behind not only magnificent bodies of water but also ideal grape growing conditions by depositing a layer of topsoil on the shale beds above the lakes. The deep lakes also provide protection from what otherwise would be a very cold climate by moderating the temperature along their shoreline.

Viniculture in the finger lake began in 1829 when the Reverend Bostwick planted a few grapevines near his home in Hammonds Port on the small “Y” shaped Keuka lake, to make sacramental wine.  His efforts were surprisingly successful and his neighbors took note.  Before long, vineyard ringed the village and Hammonds Port businesspeople banded people to form the country’s first commercial Winery, the pleasant Valley Company.  Other would be viticulturist followed suit, and within a few years, grapes were growing around Keuka, Canandaigua, and Seneca lakes.  The finger lakes is the premier wine growing region in the eastern United States.  More the 25 wineries are located on the shores of Seneca Lakes Lakewood Vineyards and Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

For decades, the vineyards of the Finger Lakes produced only native American concord, Niagara, and Delaware grapes, which are seldom used in the making of fine wines.

About 40 years ago, however, a few people began experimenting with the more complex European Vinifera grape. Again, efforts were surprisingly successful and today excellence chardonnays, Rieslings, Pinot noir, and sparking wines are produced throughout the region.  Todays, the finger lakes region boasts over 60 wineries, each one distinctly different from the next.  Some are large, some small, some house their own restaurants and gift shop.  Most hug the shores of Cayuga, Seneca, or keuka lakes and each lakes has its own wine growing association that publishes free maps and brochures, available throughout the region.

Educational Institutions in the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes is well known for its educational institutions, colleges and universities. The largest of them being Cornell University in Ithaca, the university is one of a series of educational institutes that are part of the Land-grant universities. These institutions are chosen to receive benefits from the Morrill Acts (1862 & 1890) whereby federally controlled land is granted to develop or sell in order to build “land grant” colleges/universities.

The most famous institution is Elmira College in Elmira; it was the last place of the world famous writer Mark Twain studied. Here he created the well known characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. It is also the first women’s college that granted degree’s that were equal to those men were given.

There are a number of private colleges in the region such as Ithaca College (known world-wide for its communications programme) and Keuka College in Penn Yan.  Wells College in Aurora is another private college and has cross-enrolment with the Cornell University and Ithaca College, it was an all women’s institution until 2005. Seneca Falls is home to the New York Chiropractic College and is one of only 18 Chiropractic Colleges in the U.S. The others are Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.

The region also has four community colleges; these colleges are sometimes termed junior colleges, technical colleges, or city colleges. They are generally public two year institutions that award a range of certificates from diplomas to associate’s degrees. The Finger Lakes Community College has four locations, the main one being in Canandaigua and the three others in Victor, Geneva, and Newark. It is also affiliated with the State University of New York. Cayuga County Community College which is located Auburn offers associate degree and B.A and B.S degrees. There is also Corning Community College in Corning; and Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden.

In addition to the above there are four statutory colleges. A statutory college is a section of a private university and has been allocated to receive public funding on an on-going basis. All of the following mentioned statutory colleges are based at Cornell University. Museums in the Finger Lakes

There is a vast array of museums within the Fingers Lakes region ranging from early aviation to the national women’s hall of fame. The chances are no matter what you are looking for you will find something suitable within this stunning area of New York State.

For some family fun why not try the Sciencenter which is located in Ithaca, it has numerous exhibits to discover from interactive ones such as the ‘Watergates’ which uses rubber ducks to explore the world of hydraulics. The Sagan Planet Walk, which starts at The Commons in downtown Ithaca and runs for 1.2km to the Sceincenter and is a scale model of our solar system. There is also a Curiosity Corner which has been designed especially for the younger vistor and offers safe hands on play for under fours.

In Waterloo there is ‘The National Memorial Day Museum’ and is located at the northern end of Lake Seneca. As the only federally recognised birthplace of the Memorial Day, Waterloo takes its responsibility very seriously and does its upmost best to ensure that this holidays history is not forgotten.

The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum can be found in Hammonsport which is conveniently located at the base of the Keuka Lake. The museum is dedicated to the life of the aviator who’s name its bears. It has a number of very rare pieces all that relate to early aviation as well as local history.

Also in Hammonsport, and in accordance with the Finger Lake wealth of vineyards it seems only appropriate to mention the Bully Hill Vineyards. As well as the usual tours and tastings there is a museum, The New York State Wine Museum of Greyton H Taylor. Back in the 1960’s Mr Taylors son founded the the Bully Hills Vineyards which happened to be on the Taylor Winery site. There is a Cooper Shop which has a huge collection of cooper tools and a film back how barrels are made. There are also two art galleries, within the museum itself you can find a whole host of exhibits ranging from Presidential Glassware to the Taylor Family history.

To the east of Cayuga Lake is Seneca Falls and it is home to the National Women’s Hall of Fame.  Here you can see various exhibits that based around the women this museum supports. The idea of this Hall was thought up back in 1969 by the villagers who wanted to make a shrine to the women who have contributed so much to their country. The Halls official line of reasoning for this museums existence is as follows: “To honor in perpetuity these women, citizens of the United States of America whose contributions to the arts, athletics, business, education, government, the humanities, philanthropy and science, have been the greatest value for the development of their country.” This is a direct quote from the Halls own website and conveys exactly what the museums is all about and why.

The Granger Homested and Carriage Museum is located next to Canandaigua Lake in the aptly named town of Canandaigua and has a variety of attractions on offer, some are weather and season dependant so please check their website in advance. During the winter months from January to March they offer a 10 minute sleigh ride which is made jingle bells perfect by the addition of a single horse to pull it. There are guided tours of the mansion and the carriage barns museum, carriage rides and other seasonal activates. Visitors are welcome to take in the beautifully manicured gardens and make use of benches and picnic tables that are provided.

There are countless other museums and attractions of similar nature with the Finger Lakes region, such as the Discovery Trail in Ithaca, Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester and the Yates County Genealogical & Historical Society which is located in Penn Yan on the east side of Seneca Lake.

The Finger Lakes area is rich in history and thus has many museums to choose from, some are located with close proximity to one of the lakes, other are further afield but it is a safe bet that regardless of your tastes and interest the Finger Lakes will have a museum to suit.
